First Aid Bites & A Quick Update

What to do when someone is in shock/fainting?

*Note: DO NOT stop the person from falling, help him/her fall slowly. If there is a crowd around, get them to spread out to give the casualty some air.
  • The person must lie on their back - preferably with their feet raised - to ensure enough blood gets to the brain.

  • Make sure the person is warm, comfortable and covered by a blanket if possible. Loosen restrictive clothing. (such as: ties, shoes, watch etc.)

  • Do not give them anything to drink because they could run a risk of choking.

  • If the person vomits or bleeds from the mouth, he or she must be placed on their side to prevent choking. (aka: recovery position)

  • The person should recover from it after a few minutes. If not, seek help immediately.

We are aware that there has been a halt in st. john activities. don't worry! after the exams, we will be jammed packed with special things for all of you! One day exursions, group movie outings, possibly? ;]

There will be a poll up at the sidebar tonight. We would like to hear your feedbacks. Better yet, come up to any of us Form 4s and let us know your suggestions. :D & we will see what we can do for you.

at the mean time, STUDY people ! :D

Hyperventilation

Hello dear members, here is something new for you to extend your knowledge in First Aid. :)

I'm sure you've come across this term "hyperventilation". Girls especially, you'll often come across someone saying that they hyperventilate when they see their idol. (Often used as an expression) So, what exactly is hyperventilation?

It is commonly a manifestation of acute anxiety and may accompany a panic attack.

Hyperventilation causes abnormal loss of carbon dioxide from the blood, leading to chemical changes within the blood.

Recognition:
-unnaturally fast, deep breathing
- dizziness or faintness
- trembling and tingling in the hands
- attention-seeking behaviour
- cramps in the hands and feet

What are your aims as a first aider?
- To remove the casualty from the cause of distress
- To reassure the casualty and calm her down

How do you treat the casualty?
1. Speak to the casualty, introduce yourself as a qualified first aider, then reassure him/her that everything would be fine. (Be firm but kind and reassuring)

2. If possible, lead the casualty away to a quiet place where he/she may be able to regain control of her breathing more easily and quickly. If this is not possible, ask any bystanders to leave. (control crowd)

3. If the casualty is not able to regain control of his/her breathing, ask her to re-breathe her own exhaled air from a paper bag. Tell him/her to breathe in and out slowly, using the bag, about 10 times and then breathe without the bag for 15 seconds. He/she should continue to alternate this cycle of breathing with and without the bag until the need to breathe rapidly has passed.

4. Encourage the casualty to see her doctor about preventing and controlling panic attacks in the future.

Little helpers for the day:

About 50 recruits turned up :) A relatively good turn out.

First, recruits learned about the First Aid Kit and what you find inside it.

Second, a short Theory session comprising the basics like Making a Diagnosis, Pulse Rate, Breathing Rate as well as Wounds and Bleeding. Recruits also learned a little bit about Scalds and Burns and Shock.

Next up, some fun! Bandaging! Recruits got the chance to get some hands-on experience and practice their bandaging (wrapping skills, ha ha) on their friends.

Then, we moved on the CPR. DR. ABC, kids!

Finally, Transportation! Recruits were especially excited to see the stretcher. Right?

That concludes the First Aid Crash Course 2009. We hope you guys had a blast!

Pros:
  • Very productive; we managed to teach a lot and the recruits managed to learn a lot
  • It was fun!
  • We had lessons in classrooms so it wasn't hot and uncomfortable like it is on Wednesdays
  • Juniors were incredibly responsive
Cons:
  • School doesn't allow too many Saturday meetings :(
  • Stay in St John too long and you find yourself looking more and more like our Training Apparatus :P eg.
Ha ha, just kidding :P

little helpers!

Yup, that's us! :)

Day 2, 21 February 2009

Campers who decided to sleep in because they were exhausted from the previous night's activities {*wiggles eyebrows*} were greeted with this lovely baybeh.

Hee. As warned. :)

Then everyone gathered at the assembly ground for the first activity of the day; Morning Exercise!

Awesome stuff, really.

It was lead by the camp Treasurer, Yi Jean!
-

After working up an apetite, breakfast was served.

Ample of time was given after breakfast for the campers to wash up and get themselves propped up for the Opening Ceremony.

After all the formalities, everyone changed back to tees and tracks and started back-wooding.

The traditional backwoods menu - fried rice. :D

Starting of the fire was demonstrated by the men of the Camp Committee.

Squads began to light their own fires soon after.

Smoke was everywhere.

After that tasty meal, QMs had to clean up while campers had some free time before the next activity.

Isn't the circle just so perfect? ;D

-

After that, campers were briefed on the Obstacle Race.

There were 8 stations altogether.

#1 Walking on Ropes

Campers were required to complete their "journey" from one end of the rope to the other.

# 2 The Chair and Cup Race

Campers had to transport the water from point A to B by using two chairs and two man power.
Surely this is an opportunity to build up team work, no? ;)

#3 Mud Crawl

Didn't you guys just love this? :D A free mud bath. Woot~

#4 Flour and Sweets
Campers definitely had an awesome and also free makeover! ;)

#5 Find Your Tokens.
Didn't the handwash feel good?

#6 Egg and Armpits.
hohoho, doesn't the name itself disgust you? XD

#7 Ping-Pong Ball Float!

It was definitely a moment for the guys to show off their sexy bodies *winks* ;)

During their 6th station, SL of each squads were "kidnapped" by our very own committee leaving the ASL's in charge. At the final station, the squad members together with their ASL's had to save their SL's from the "injuries" left behind by our evil committee. x)

-

After all the squads have finished their course, time was given to wash all the flour and the mud and the oil and other unknown things.

But lo-behold, the boys' toilets water supply was shortened. =x

And the girls' too had the same problem.

But just in a matter of time, everyone managed to clean up and start feeling the MK jitters.

-

MK started at 8.30pm.

The emcees for the night were Yi Jean and Devinia Sunshine.

All squads were creative with their performances.

Some were very sporting and others were LOL-rated.

Then, the campers were surprised with a lil something that the camp committees cooked up - a beautiful campfire. :)

Sang some campfire songs and danced around it.

-

Members soon got tired after that. Lights out; 12.15.
